We do monoculture,

but we do not know why.

Monoculture is a standing practice around the world, but it lacks a plausible blueprint. What we do have is plenty of empirical and conceptual evidence for the benefits of biological diversity. As a result, we can explain why monocultures are prone to failure, but we do not have a decent understanding why they are still with us. Monoculture is probably the greatest project of global modernity that people have embarked upon without a satisfactory paradigm.
