No, we do not believe in supernatural forces. When we talk about monoculture as a form of magical thinking, we seek to flag how stakeholders coped with the gaping conceptual hole at the heart of monoculture. It is quite troubling if you find yourself trapped in an endeavor without a plausible paradigm: monocultures produce a distinct type of mental stress that this project seeks to take seriously. Time and again, we find a vague hope that things will somehow work out against all odds. And if people hope for a way forward while realizing that things continue to fall apart – what do you call that if not magical thinking?
