Giving sense to the senseless.

The German philosopher Theodor Lessing wrote a famous essay on “Geschichte als Sinngebung des Sinnlosen” – which roughly translates as “history as giving sense to the senseless”. He thought about World War One, but the phrase strikes a nerve when you deal with monoculture: how do you write a rational analysis of a global project that defies rationalization? There is a fine line between understanding motivations, driving forces, and enabling concepts and suggesting an intellectual clarity that never was. Finding the right words is an ongoing struggle. Language tends to smoothen an endeavor that was really about patchworking a way through a holy mess.
